Why You Should Back Up to the Cloud

We live in an age where everything runs on information, and our need to store that massive amount of information grows as time goes by. It is imperative that we can access our data quickly, reliably, and securely. Cloud computing answers that need in a way no other technology today can compare.

Disaster Recovery

Never underestimate the need to create data back-ups. Not archiving vital data is an open invitation for trouble. At some point, a single disaster—machine loss or failure, malware, hackers, earthquakes, floods, or fires—is guaranteed to wipe out most or all of your information. For personal use, that can mean losing your music, photos, and records of precious memories. For a company, that may mean losing your business.

Cloud storage provides you an external data center for complete back-ups regardless of the size of your data. Your files are encrypted during transmission and they can stay encrypted in storage. Since cloud providers use multiple geographic sites for storage, you can be certain that even if one fails, another has a copy of your information. Even after a disaster, you can retrieve your data and continue on as before.

Ease and Convenience

Backing up can be time-consuming, but so is data retrieval, particularly from physical drives. With cloud computing, you don’t need to be at your data center to access your files–you can do so from anywhere in the world where you can be online. The cloud makes disaster recovery easy and, more importantly, fast.

Lower storage cost

You can always use physical storage such as tape or hard drives to back up your files. But as time goes by and you accumulate more files, this will mean continually provisioning and upgrading their storage equipment, particularly for businesses and corporations that generate large amounts of data.

For personal storage, cloud storage services typically offer free service for a certain amount of space. For larger requirements, you can pay for the additional storage you need. By leveraging on existing infrastructure, you eliminate the need to keep purchasing and provisioning hardware for your growing archives.

Cloud back-up is even cheaper for long-term storage. Amazon’s Glacier service can back up files you access only once a month, for a very low fee. You can also set cloud to backup automatically for even less operational costs and added convenience.

Employing a cloud-based storage system is an important strategy that merits serious consideration. To learn about best practices for securely migrating into the cloud, consult with experts here at Polarseven.
