Elastic Beanstalk Update: Application Health Monitoring
As mentioned in a previous post, AWS Elastic Beanstalk makes it easy to deploy and scale web applications and services developed using Java .NET, PHP, Node.js, Python, Ruby, Go and Docker. Simply upload your code and Elastic Beanstalk takes care of deployment for you, all at no extra cost.
Now, Elastic Beanstalk is capable of enhanced application health monitoring. Previously, you had to watch for issues by manually looking at a faulty application’s URL or monitoring back end metrics. The new application health monitor lets Elastic Beanstalk to do the monitoring for you, changing the application status when problems occur.
Elastic Beanstalk can monitor processes, essential metrics, and the health check statuses of EC2 and ELB. It will flag a warning and a list of causes in the event more than 1% of processes start failing.

Free Tier Usage Monitoring
You’re probably aware that AWS offers a Free Tier, where you can use most of the AWS services either for a limited degree or a limited time after signing up for an AWS account. The AWS Guide will tell you exactly how to get started.
For as long as you do not exceed the allowances on the Free Tier, you won’t get charged. That may be hard to track if you are a prolific user of AWS services. Thankfully, AWS now allows you to monitor your usage on its Free Tier.
You can access this features by clicking on your account name on the upper right hand corner of the AWS screen and selecting Billing & Cost Management. The next screen will show you your actual usage (month-to-date) and your possible consumption (forecast).
From there, you may use this tool to determine how much more you can consume to remain in the Free Tier, or you may take advantage of the other available services you haven’t tried yet.
AWS provides an awesome set of tools and services that get better and better every month. If you want to learn how you can leverage on AWS to power your enterprise, get some advice from a certified cloud consultant here at PolarSeven.
