Just how powerful is AWS Simple Storage Service (S3)? How about holding the complete genome sequence of over 3,000 varieties of rice?
The 3,000 Rice Genome sequencing project aims to sequence the 3,024 varieties of rice from countries. Being a staple diet of half the world’s population, it’s critical for scientists to come up with a way to raise rice yields by 25% come 2030, in order to meet the equivalent rise in population.
AWS helps enable this research by housing the data containing over 30 million genetic variations of rice genes. Best of all, it’s accessible to the public. Scientists may mine this data to study and potentially identify combinations that best resists climate change and disease while yielding higher crops.
