AWS has announced an update to Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL—you may now easily create cross-region read replicas for your AWS RDS for PostgreSQL database instances. This is a useful feature for several reasons.
- It makes it easier for your customers in regions outside of your own to access your database. Having a database in their region lowers latency, making it more accessible.
- This is another means of creating a backup for your database. Should your master database fail, you can use the read replica to replace it.
- It makes is simpler to migrate your database to another region. Once a replica is generated, you can make it the master database for that region.
You may learn more about how to create a read replica from your AWS Management Console at the RDS documentation.. This feature is available for all RDS PostgreSQL databases version 9.5.2 or 9.4.7 and up.
