Amazon RDS Enhanced Monitoring

Amazon RDS Enhanced Monitoring

Aiming to build a relational database? Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) is a great tool that makes it very simple to set up, run, scale, and maintain one. Since AWS takes care of the details of database management for you, you can simply focus on running your business.

To give even more value to an already powerful tool, AWS has launched an Enhanced Monitoring feature. This update allows you to access over 50 new metrics for CPU, memory, file system, and disk I/O.

To enable this feature for your existing RDS database instance, select your instance in the RDS console and select Modify from the Instance Options Menu. Enable the feature, choose an IAM role, select a preferred granularity, then choose to Apply Immediately. You are then good to go.

All these metrics can be published to AWS CloudWatch for better monitoring. Enhanced Monitoring is available for MySQL 5.6, MariaDB, and Amazon Aurora, and on all instance types save for t1.micro and m1.small.
