Amazon EBS has previously given users the ability to encrypt snapshots with AWS Key Management System (KMS). It also allowed users to copy snapshots with other AWS accounts so they may use them to make new volumes.
Finally, EBS is allowing users to copy encrypted snapshots between accounts, even across different regions.
The process involves the following:
- Provide a copy of the encryption key to the snapshot with target account.
- Share the EBS snapshot with the target account.
- If you want to create a new volume based on the snapshot, make a copy of it then create the new volume through the target account.
You may use this updated feature in any region that has the KMS tool. Please note that while it will work on any type of volume, you may not use it with AMIs at least for now.
