AWS Cloud Helps Explore Higgs Boson Data

The AWS Cloud has come a long way not just in helping to expand business and medicine, but scientific research as well.

The 2012 discovery of the Higgs Boson, also know as the God Particle, has become one of the most significant breakthroughs of the 21st century. Found as a result of experiments ATLAS and CMS, it helps explain why everything has mass. It has also rightly won its theorists the 2013 Nobel Prize.

But what of the data generated by these experiments? CMS alone produces about 1 PTB of raw data per second. It must then be distributed to other data centers around the world for study and processing. And as more data comes in, the need for greater processing power rises as well.

Fermilab solves this problem by calling on the AWS cloud infrastructure through the High Energy Physics (HEP) Cloud Project. This lowers the cost of computational services by a large amount, considering that HEP requires large amounts of compute resources in irregular cycles.

The HEP cloud decision engine handles several tasks. It manages EC2 Spot market price fluctuations, initializes AWS EC2 instances, tracks their DNS names through AWS Route 53, and handles all these services using AWS CloudFormation.

There’s still a lot of work left to be done in order to fully gain the benefits of the Higgs Boson discovery, but it helps to know that we will get to that future much faster through cloud computing.
